Every vehicle on Mauritian roads must carry at least third-party cover. But the gap between the legal minimum and the cover you actually need can be the difference between a phone call and a financial setback. Here is how to decide.
The three levels of motor cover
Motor insurance in Mauritius comes in three tiers. Third Party Only covers your liability for injury and damage you cause to others — it is the legal minimum and the cheapest option, but your own vehicle is not protected. Third Party Fire & Theft adds cover if your vehicle is stolen or damaged by fire. Comprehensive covers all of the above plus accidental damage to your own vehicle.
If your vehicle would be expensive to repair or replace out of pocket, comprehensive cover usually costs far less than the risk it removes.
What to weigh before you choose
The right tier depends on four practical questions:
- Vehicle value — newer cars, SUVs, and hybrids generally justify comprehensive cover; an older runabout may not.
- Usage — daily commuting through Port Louis traffic carries more exposure than occasional weekend driving.
- Financing — if the vehicle is on lease or loan, the lender will usually require comprehensive cover.
- Cyclone and flood exposure — check whether natural events are included or available as an extension.
Look past the premium
Two policies with the same price can behave very differently at claim time. Compare the excess you would pay on each claim, whether betterment applies to older vehicles, if a courtesy car is provided during repairs, and how windscreen, accessories, and personal effects are treated. This is where a broker earns their place.
The cheapest policy is the one that pays properly when you need it — not the one with the lowest premium.
How we help
Tell us about your vehicle and how you use it, and we will compare options across our underwriting markets, explain the differences in plain language, and arrange cover — often with same-day issue. And if you ever need to claim, we manage the process with the insurer from notification to settlement.
